Subria (pronounced Subeerah) is a singer-songwriter from Toronto, Canada, known for her eclectic, soulful sound and emotionally resonant performances. Her music weaves together influences from jazz, R&B, gospel, and Caribbean traditions—reflecting a life steeped in rhythm and story.
Born into a deeply musical family, Subria was raised on vinyl records, church harmonies, and the vibrant pulse of soca and reggae. Her father was a DJ in the ’70s; her mother sang in the church choir. Music was everywhere. She learned West African drumming and dance as a child, played the steelpan, and spent her early years singing in groups, duets, and as a soloist in both church and community spaces.
Over the years, Subria’s voice has carried her across stages in Houston, Cape Town, and her hometown of Toronto, with performances at beloved venues such as Jazz FM, Lula Lounge, and the Jazz Bistro. Her work, though grounded in jazz and soul, reaches across genres, shaped by a love of collaboration and a deep belief in the power of connection.
As a songwriter, Subria explores themes of love and liberation—two forces that guide her life and art. Her upcoming debut EP, Anywhere But Here, produced by bassist and composer Andrew Stewart, reflects her commitment to honest storytelling and artistic exploration.
When she’s not performing or writing, Subria finds inspiration in the everyday magic of motherhood, guided by the wonder-filled eyes of her young daughter, Amarah.
